Last updated: 19th January 2010 Welcome to the Education Institute for Scotland, Highland Local Association web site. Founded in 1847 The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) is the oldest teaching union in the world. Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter to the EIS and among the powers conferred was the power to award a degree of "Fellow of the Institute". The EIS remains the only trade union which awards degrees. In the wider world, the EIS plays an active and prominent part in the major teacher international organisation, Education International representing over 20 million teachers from 300 teacher organisations in over 140 countries and the European Trade Union Committee for Education TEUCE - (see EI website). The EIS too has contributed generously in appeals for aid, for example in developing countries, setting aside 1% of its subscription for this purpose.
The Highland Local Association tries to take a proactive approach to supporting members and retired members who may need the help available through the Benevolent Funds of the Institute. The fund is managed carefully and discreetly in Highland by Mrs Ruth Whitaker who can be contacted easily by e-mail at the link shown on this page or through the Local Association Secretary, Andrew Stewart. If you know of anyone who is in need of help due to temporary or long term difficulties they may be facing - please get in touch. Your enquiry will be dealt with sensitively and wherever possible will give financial support and appropriate advice. All enquiries will be treated discreetly and confidentially.
